10 THINGS I LEARNED BY BEING MY OWN BOSS

Posted on

$250 GIVEAWAY DETAILS ENCLOSED! JUST MY LITTLE THANK YOU!

It’s the end of the year, and like many, this is the time when I reflect on the past and plan for what’s ahead. NAVEDA is only a few years young, and there is so much I have to be thankful for… the opportunities I’ve had, the warmth in which my brand has been received, and of course my clients and the people I've met and worked with along the way.

But not all is rainbows and unicorns in entrepreneur land… if you’re like me, you set sometimes unrealistic (who am i kidding…more like, humanly impossible) goals for yourself. Many of those goals have thankfully become a reality, while others I write in all caps and highlight in my goals-list for the next year (I really do this…almost like i’m yelling at myself LOL). As an entrepreneur, regardless of how confident you are in your abilities to dream, live and conquer… there are undoubtedly days where you feel like you’re drowning in to-do’s.  Those are the days that have the power of getting in my way, and that’s why this blog post is especially therapeutic for me… hope you find it helpful as well!

++be sure to read all the way through because there is a special surprise waiting for you at the end!++

So here goes…10 things I’ve learned from being my OWN BOSS:

1. TO DO LIST ON A POST-IT!

On days where I’ve worked until every inch of me is thoroughly exhausted, sometimes I still feel like nothing was accomplished. Those are the days where I’ve put 80 million tasks on my to-do list and then I get upset when a fraction of them get done.

So here’s a New Year’s resolution I’ve already started and plan to continue…and this one I learned from my husband, Ben. On a day where he needs to get sh*t done, he writes down all of his tasks on a single post-it note. For the things that don’t fit on the post-it, oh well…they get moved to another day. This way, tasks are prioritized and there is a sense of accomplishment when everything on the post-it is scratched off! It forces me to think about what's truly MOST important to get done.

2. GETTING UNCOMFORTABLE

Being a business owner means creating and cultivating your own network. For those that know me well, I can be quiet if I don’t know you. When I launched my business, I made it a personal mission to make myself uncomfortable by going to as many networking opportunities as I possibly could and introducing myself to at least 2-3 new people each time! It’s awkward to come up with conversation with a total stranger, but I can’t tell you how helpful this has been in the growth of my company. It doesn’t hurt of course that my background is in sales and business development, so I’m used to cultivating new relationships...nonetheless, it’s never easy and always feels weird!

3. SEVEN MILLION HATS

Nope, that’s not an exaggeration. For those that wonder what entrepreneurs do all day long, well, the real question should be…what do we not do all day long?  Being a fashion entrepreneur  means being a leader, a secretary, a graphic artist or web developer (even if that means learning through YouTube), a seamstress, a stylist, an art director, an administrator, a greeter, a photographer or editor, a writer, a salesperson, and even the one making coffee. It's hard work and non-stop, but I love it and wouldn’t have it any other way. There are so many things this business has forced me to learn --- things I thought I’d never need or have to do myself. Of course, I’m lucky to have a team beside me and those I can loop in when I want to pull my hair out, but every day brings a new challenge and a new mountain to climb. It’s exciting and no day is the same! Bring on more hats!

4. USING OCD IN MY BENEFIT

If you’re like me, chaos drives you bananas! I am a neat freak and proud of it (my husband compares me to Monica on Friends). You can see it in everything I do --- even how our place is kept.  Side note: it has been my dream to be featured in Architectural Digest, and so maybe subconsciously I wish someday the magazine’s editors will randomly stop by and when they do, our home will be photo-ready (I know, wishful thinking).

In any case, my OCD-ways have definitely helped me in this business. It’s what make me create spreadsheet after spreadsheet, and makes me stay sane! My advice to anyone entering the entrepreneur world would be to stay as organized as possible --- write everything down (or get it in a spreadsheet), from thoughts and concepts to plans and strategies, then organize and prioritize them. Set achievable due dates for each of those line items, and include a "helpful source" column in the mix. In your “helpful source” column, include contacts or inspiration that can help you complete that line item. Trust me, it helps!

5. MENTAL BREAKS ARE ALLOWED

Just like any professional, entrepreneurs need vacations and time to hit the refresh button from time to time. If you are a business owner, learn to be OK with that. This has always been a struggle for me…I’m the person bringing my laptop on vacation. However, the last trip I took, I didn’t pack it for once and though I needed to stay in touch with customers via phone, I wasn’t staring at a computer for hours on end and missing special irreplaceable moments. I came back refreshed and ready to take on new work adventures.

6. BE THE BOSS I ALWAYS WANTED TO WORK FOR

This is one of my favorite lessons. Having had several years of experience in the corporate world prior to launching NAVEDA, I worked with a number of leaders. I’m sure you can agree, some people make for amazing leaders, while others simply don’t. When I launched my brand, I made an internal promise to myself to try and emulate the leadership characteristics I valued most in the corporate space.  I try my best to lead with my heart and my head, always remembering we are all human at the end of the day and kindness always wins...and gets the job done!

7. BECOMING BESTIES WITH MY CUSTOMER

I mean this literally and figuratively. As a business owner, it is KEY to define your target market --- down to every detail about him/her as if they were your best friend. Name the customer and jot down everything about that person in customer profile form …likes, dislikes, age, income, lifestyle, personal style, etc. Contact us here  to receive a FREE template!

This exercise helps to get to know your customer, which will help you develop your products/services centered on his/her needs. I often re-visit and add to my customer profile. As your business evolves, so will your customer and it’s important to note down those changes.

8. SAYING NO

Early on, when I first launched NAVEDA, I would say yes to virtually every project in efforts to gain exposure. As time passed however, and the brand became recognizable on its own, I had to really think about everything I was going to get involved in from a business standpoint. I get loads of requests on a daily basis to work on projects or collaborations, and while I appreciate that, some are just not a fit for NAVEDA and where the brand is going. This was a tough thing for me to learn and accept, because I struggle with saying NO in fear of coming across rude. However, at the end of the day, your brand is yours, and therefore you are the only one who has the right to un-apologetically say NO when things don’t make business sense for you.

9. I AM MY BRAND, MY BRAND IS ME

Everything I do is a reflection of my brand. Literally! This sort of echoes #8, but beyond that, it’s about living, breathing, existing 100% as your brand. It has to do with remembering that your actions and reactions in every situation speak to who you are as a person of course, but outside of that, also to what your brand is characterized by.

10. HAVE FUN!

I absolutely love what I do! It’s challenging and a TON of work, but it’s mine and I love it! Every day is fun and rarely feels like work!
